easyWhy tonight. A Manhattan made with scotch. Blended scotch keeps it civil; a peated malt turns it into something else entirely.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- scotch
- sweet vermouth
- angostura
Method
- 2 oz Scotch, 1 oz sweet vermouth, two dashes Angostura. Stir, strain up.
- A Manhattan with Scotch. Blended Scotch is the right call; a heavily peated Islay turns it into something else entirely, which may or may not be what you want.
- Cherry rather than lemon peel here.
- If it tastes hot, you under-diluted. Stir it another fifteen seconds.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- scotch
- Malt, smoke or both depending on the bottle, and it does not sit quietly under other ingredients.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
- angostura
- Bitters are seasoning for a drink — the salt of the bar.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares sweet vermouth, angostura
Manhattan
Two parts whiskey to one vermouth, stirred cold. The vermouth is a fresh ingredient and the bottle that has been open a year is why yours is wrong.

Rye Manhattan
Rye sibling on the same bones.

Blood and Sand
Equal parts scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice. It should not work with scotch in it, and it does.

Martinez
Gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and bitters — the drink the Martini came from, and much richer than its descendant.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
