What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bourbon
- sweet vermouth
- angostura
Method
- 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, two dashes Angostura, stirred over ice for a full thirty seconds.
- Stirred, never shaken. Shaking a drink with no citrus in it clouds it and aerates it, and it goes flat in the glass inside a minute.
- Strain up into a frozen glass. One cherry, drained on paper first, or an orange peel — not both.
- Bourbon makes it rounder and sweeter than rye does. If it reads as syrupy, that is the bourbon: drop the vermouth to ¾ oz rather than reaching for more bitters.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bourbon
- Corn-sweet and vanilla-heavy from new oak, so it takes bitterness and citrus without being flattened.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
- angostura
- Bitters are seasoning for a drink — the salt of the bar.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Boulevardier
A Negroni that swapped gin for whiskey, and it wants a little more whiskey than equal parts to stand up to the Campari.

Rob Roy
A Manhattan made with scotch. Blended scotch keeps it civil; a peated malt turns it into something else entirely.

Bourbon coffee
Bourbon in place of vodka, so the drink has a spine. Bitters keep the coffee liqueur from turning it into pudding.
