easyWhy tonight. Rye sibling on the same bones.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- rye
- sweet vermouth
- angostura
Method
- 2 oz rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, two dashes Angostura. Stir over ice for a full thirty seconds.
- Rye rather than bourbon is the original and the better version: it is drier and peppery, and it stops the vermouth turning the drink into syrup.
- Strain up into a frozen glass. Cherry, and none of its syrup.
- If it tastes hot, you under-diluted. If it tastes flat, the vermouth has been open too long — it is wine, and it belongs in the fridge.

Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- rye
- Spice and a dry, peppery edge, which is why a rye drink tastes leaner than the same drink in bourbon.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
- angostura
- Bitters are seasoning for a drink — the salt of the bar.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Vieux Carré
Rye and cognac together under vermouth and two bitters. A New Orleans drink and one of the richest things on this list.
Shares sweet vermouth, angostura
Manhattan
Two parts whiskey to one vermouth, stirred cold. The vermouth is a fresh ingredient and the bottle that has been open a year is why yours is wrong.

Rob Roy
A Manhattan made with scotch. Blended scotch keeps it civil; a peated malt turns it into something else entirely.

Martinez
Gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and bitters — the drink the Martini came from, and much richer than its descendant.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
