mediumWhy tonight. Equal parts scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice. It should not work with scotch in it, and it does.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- scotch
- sweet vermouth
- cointreau
- cherry
Method
- Equal parts: ¾ oz each Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice. Shake, strain up.
- It should not work and it does. Scotch and orange juice is the pairing everyone doubts and it is the reason the drink survived.
- Blended Scotch. Peat here is a disaster.
- Fresh orange juice or nothing. Equal parts means the weakest ingredient is a quarter of the drink, and carton juice will be obvious.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- scotch
- Malt, smoke or both depending on the bottle, and it does not sit quietly under other ingredients.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
- cointreau
- Clean bitter orange with real sweetness behind it, so it does two jobs in a sour and lets you use less syrup.
- cherry
- Sweet with a bitter almond note in the pit, which is why cherry and almond keep showing up together.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares scotch, sweet vermouth
Rob Roy
A Manhattan made with scotch. Blended scotch keeps it civil; a peated malt turns it into something else entirely.
Shares sweet vermouth
Americano
Campari, vermouth and soda over ice — the Negroni before gin was added, and about half the strength.

Godfather
Scotch and amaretto, and nothing else. Two ingredients, poured over one big cube, and it is a whole after-dinner drink.
Shares sweet vermouth
Negroni Sbagliato
The mistaken Negroni — prosecco where the gin should be. Lower, lighter, and easier to drink two of.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
