easyWhy tonight. Lillet over ice with tonic and a thick slice of orange. Low in alcohol and the best thing to hand somebody at five in the afternoon.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- lillet
- tonic
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: orange.
Method
- 2 oz Lillet blanc over plenty of ice in a wine glass, topped with tonic.
- Lillet is wine and it oxidizes. Keep the bottle in the fridge and finish it inside a month, or this drink will taste stale and you will blame the tonic.
- Orange peel expressed over the top, or a cucumber ribbon.
- Around eight percent alcohol in the glass, which is the point.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- lillet
- Fortified and aromatized wine, lightly bitter and citrusy, and it is perishable like vermouth.
- tonic
- Bitter and sweet at once, so it is a mixer with an opinion.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Lillet rocks
Lillet over ice with a thick slice of orange. Low, floral and the correct thing to drink before dinner rather than after.
Shares tonic
Amaro tonic
Amaro and tonic over plenty of ice. Two kinds of bitterness that turn out to soften each other.
Shares tonic
Aperol tonic
Lighter than a spritz and less sweet, because tonic brings its own bitterness. A good drink for a long afternoon.

Chartreuse and tonic
Green Chartreuse over ice with tonic. The herbs come forward when they are stretched, and it is far easier to drink than it sounds.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
