What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- chartreuse
- tonic
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: lime.
Method
- 1½ oz green Chartreuse over a full glass of ice, topped with tonic.
- Chartreuse is 55% and enormously herbal, so a long tonic is one of the few things that can carry it.
- Lime rather than lemon, squeezed in.
- Yellow Chartreuse makes a gentler, honeyed version that more people will finish.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- chartreuse
- Enormously herbal and enormously strong, made to a recipe almost nobody knows.
- tonic
- Bitter and sweet at once, so it is a mixer with an opinion.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Chartreuse rocks
Green Chartreuse over one large cube and nothing else. A hundred and thirty herbs, and the ice is what opens them up.
Shares tonic
Amaro tonic
Amaro and tonic over plenty of ice. Two kinds of bitterness that turn out to soften each other.
Shares tonic
Aperol tonic
Lighter than a spritz and less sweet, because tonic brings its own bitterness. A good drink for a long afternoon.

Gin and tonic
Highball arithmetic: one part gin to three of tonic, over more ice than looks necessary. A warm mixer is what ruins it, not the ratio.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
