What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bourbon
- ginger beer
- lime
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: mint.
Method
- 2 oz bourbon, ½ oz lime, ginger beer to top, over plenty of ice.
- Ginger beer, not ginger ale. Ale is sugar water and the drink collapses without the heat.
- Build in the glass, one lift, lime wedge squeezed and dropped in.
- Bourbon and ginger are both sweet, so this needs more lime than a vodka mule does — a full half ounce, not a token wedge.

Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bourbon
- Corn-sweet and vanilla-heavy from new oak, so it takes bitterness and citrus without being flattened.
- ginger beer
- Heat and sweetness with real carbonation behind it, which is why it carries a drink that ginger ale only decorates.
- lime
- Sharper and more floral than lemon, and it fades faster — juice it the same hour you use it.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Dark and Stormy
Dark rum floated over ginger beer and lime so it arrives in layers. Stir it yourself at the table; that is the point.

Mezcal mule
Ginger beer against smoke, which is a better pairing than ginger and vodka ever was.
