Rice pudding
Leftover rice, forty slow minutes, and no hurry. Sugar goes in late or the grains stay hard, and it should look too loose when you stop.

What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- rice
- milk
- sugar
- vanilla
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: cinnamon.
Method
- Short grain rice, low heat, and no hurry. Forty minutes of barely-there simmering, stirred often.
- Add the sugar late, in the last ten minutes. Sugar early slows the starch from softening and the grains stay hard.
- Vanilla off the heat, because the aroma boils away.
- Pull it looser than you want to eat it. It sets substantially as it cools and a perfect-looking pot goes stiff in the fridge.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- rice
- Starch that either steams or fries, and the two want opposite things.
- milk
- Softness and a little sweetness.
- sugar
- Not just sweetness — it balances acid and bitterness, which is why a sour drink and a tomato sauce both want a little.
- vanilla
- It reads as sweetness without adding any, which is why it makes desserts taste richer than they are.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

If you bought for this, you can already make these
Shares vanilla, milk, sugar
Banana pudding cups
Stovetop custard, sliced banana. Nilla wafers are a bonus, not a requirement.
Shares milk, sugar, vanilla
Bread pudding
Stale bread is an asset. Custard, bake until just set.
Shares milk, sugar, vanilla
Flan
Caramel in the pan first, then custard. Water bath if you can. Vanilla. It should tremble, not rubber. Don't scramble it.
Shares milk, sugar
Cinnamon toast custard
Stale bread is the asset here, not the problem. Soak both sides properly and go medium — high heat browns the crust before the middle sets.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
