What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bread
- eggs
- milk
- cinnamon
- sugar
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: vanilla.
Method
- Stale bread, or bread dried in a low oven. Fresh bread collapses in custard and fries to a wet sponge.
- Eggs, milk, sugar and cinnamon whisked properly smooth so no white streaks are left to cook into ribbons.
- Soak both sides — thirty seconds a side for thick slices, less for thin. Long enough to be heavy, short of falling apart.
- Medium heat in butter, and be patient. High heat browns the crust before the custard inside has set.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bread
- Structure, thickener, and the reason a lot of these dishes stretch.
- eggs
- The cheapest way to turn a side dish into dinner.
- milk
- Softness and a little sweetness.
- cinnamon
- Warm and sweet-smelling without being sweet, which is why it works in a stew as readily as in a pastry.
- sugar
- Not just sweetness — it balances acid and bitterness, which is why a sour drink and a tomato sauce both want a little.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.
Cooks from the same box
If you bought for this, you can already make these
Shares bread, eggs, milk
Challah French toast
Enriched bread, custard, cinnamon, a moderate pan. Maple after. Stale is an asset. Don't use sandwich bread and wonder why it fell apart.
Shares bread, eggs, milk
Bread pudding
Stale bread is an asset. Custard, bake until just set.
Shares bread, eggs, milk
French toast
Stale bread earns its keep. Soak until the custard reaches the crumb.
Shares bread, eggs, cinnamon
Matzo brei
Passover egg-bread without the box: torn bread soaked in egg, fried in butter. Cinnamon-sugar or salt. It should be custardy, not French toast.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
