mediumWhy tonight. Cinnamon in the meat sauce, a milk top. Not lasagna with a different name.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- pasta
- beef
- tomato
- cinnamon
- milk
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: parmesan, eggs.
Method
- Cinnamon is what makes it pastitsio rather than a baked bolognese, and a little goes a long way.
- Cook the meat sauce down until it is dry. Any liquid left will soak the pasta into mush overnight in the oven.
- Temper the eggs into the warm milk sauce off the heat, or you get sweet scrambled egg on top.
- Rest it properly before cutting — twenty minutes minimum, or the layers refuse to hold.
An educational plan from a curated corpus. Not a nutrition, allergen, or doneness guarantee.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- pasta
- The sauce finishes on the pasta, not the other way around.
- beef
- Fat and connective tissue decide the method.
- tomato
- Sweet, sour and savory at once, which is why it holds up so many dishes with no meat in them.
- cinnamon
- Warm and sweet-smelling without being sweet, which is why it works in a stew as readily as in a pastry.
- milk
- Softness and a little sweetness.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

If you bought for this, you can already make these
Shares beef, cinnamon, tomato
Cincinnati chili
Chili on spaghetti. Cinnamon is not a mistake. Cumin and tomato, no beans in the pot if you are being orthodox. Cheddar on top. It should taste like spice, not Texas.
Shares pasta, beef, tomato
Youvetsi
Greek baked orzo with beef, cinnamon in the tomato. Cheese at the table. The pasta cooks in the sauce. Don't make beefaroni and skip the cinnamon.

Eggplant and beef with cinnamon
Lamb if you have it; beef if not. Cinnamon in the tomato is the tell.
Shares milk, cinnamon
Cinnamon oats
Cinnamon into the dry oats, not sprinkled on top. Salt the pot, and loosen it at the table because oats set solid in the bowl.
