mediumWhy tonight. Gin and Chartreuse with grapefruit, which takes the sweetness out and leaves the herbs. Underrated and easy to drink.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- gin
- chartreuse
- grapefruit
- lemon
Method
- 1½ oz gin, ½ oz yellow Chartreuse, ½ oz grapefruit, ¼ oz lemon, a bar spoon of syrup. Shake hard, strain up.
- Yellow Chartreuse, not green — it is gentler and honeyed, and green would walk straight over the grapefruit.
- Two acids on purpose: grapefruit for body and bitterness, lemon for the sharpness grapefruit lacks.
- No garnish. A well-made Cloister is pale gold and does not need help.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- gin
- Botanicals over a neutral base, and every bottle draws its own map — juniper-forward gin makes a bracing drink, a softer modern one makes a floral one.
- chartreuse
- Enormously herbal and enormously strong, made to a recipe almost nobody knows.
- grapefruit
- Bitter as well as sour, which makes it the one citrus that can carry a drink on its own.
- lemon
- Acid you add at the end, not the start.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
