What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- gin
- tonic
- rosemary
- lemon
Method
- Bruise the rosemary and drop it in with the ice rather than steeping it in syrup — tonic is already sweet.
- Rosemary is piney and assertive, and gin is already piney. One small sprig, not three.
- Tonic poured down the side over hard ice, stirred once.
- Lemon peel expressed over the top. Rosemary, juniper and citrus oil is one aroma made of three things.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- gin
- Botanicals over a neutral base, and every bottle draws its own map — juniper-forward gin makes a bracing drink, a softer modern one makes a floral one.
- tonic
- Bitter and sweet at once, so it is a mixer with an opinion.
- rosemary
- Pine and resin, and strong enough to take over.
- lemon
- Acid you add at the end, not the start.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Gin and tonic
Highball arithmetic: one part gin to three of tonic, over more ice than looks necessary. A warm mixer is what ruins it, not the ratio.

Gin and amaro
Gin and amaro with a squeeze of lemon. Two bottles, one glass, and a genuinely good drink in about thirty seconds.

Suze and tonic
Gentian highball. Bitter like a tonic, then more. Lemon peel. Don't hide it in juice.

Army & Navy
Gin, lemon and orgeat. Three ingredients, and it teaches you what orgeat is actually for.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
