easyWhy tonight. A pinch of turmeric. It stains, and too much tastes medicinal.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- lemon
- turmeric
- honey
- soda
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: ginger, black pepper.
Method
- A pinch of turmeric only, whisked into the honey syrup so it disperses rather than sitting on the surface.
- It stains glasses, cloths and hands. Wipe up quickly and do not make this in anything porous.
- Fresh lemon, then soda over ice.
- Black pepper is the traditional partner and it also gives the drink a warmth that keeps it from being flat.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- lemon
- Acid you add at the end, not the start.
- turmeric
- Color first, then a warm bitterness.
- honey
- Sweetness with a floral edge and enough body to change the texture of what it is in.
- soda
- Carbonation is a texture and it is the first thing you lose.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.
