What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- apple
- cinnamon
- lemon
- soda
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: honey, ginger.
Method
- Steep a cinnamon stick in warm apple juice for ten minutes, then chill it. Ground cinnamon will not dissolve and floats as grit.
- Cloudy apple juice, not clear — clear has had the flavor filtered out with the haze.
- Lemon to stop it being flatly sweet, then soda over ice.
- It is mulled cider taken in the other direction, and it is a better cold drink than a hot one.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- apple
- Sweet, acidic and firm, which is a rare combination — it holds its shape in a hot pan and cuts through fat on a cold plate.
- cinnamon
- Warm and sweet-smelling without being sweet, which is why it works in a stew as readily as in a pastry.
- lemon
- Acid you add at the end, not the start.
- soda
- Carbonation is a texture and it is the first thing you lose.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Hot. Bourbon if you want it. The apple has to be real, not a dust of flavor.
