What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bourbon
- apple
- soda
- cinnamon
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: lemon.
Method
- Cloudy apple juice, not clear. Clear juice has been filtered of the flavor along with the haze.
- Bourbon and apple over hard ice, soda to lengthen it, stirred once only.
- A cinnamon stick as a stirrer rather than ground cinnamon, which floats as grit and never dissolves.
- Lemon to stop it being flatly sweet. Apple is low in acid and every apple drink needs help.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bourbon
- Corn-sweet and vanilla-heavy from new oak, so it takes bitterness and citrus without being flattened.
- apple
- Sweet, acidic and firm, which is a rare combination — it holds its shape in a hot pan and cuts through fat on a cold plate.
- soda
- Carbonation is a texture and it is the first thing you lose.
- cinnamon
- Warm and sweet-smelling without being sweet, which is why it works in a stew as readily as in a pastry.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Whiskey highball
Whiskey and soda, and the only things that matter are the coldness of the glass and the freshness of the bubbles.
Shares bourbon, apple
Apple cider Old Fashioned
A little apple, not a mug of cider. Maple and bitters. It should still taste like whiskey.
Shares apple, soda
Maple cider sparkling
Apple and maple, not pie filling. Soda last.
