What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- sweet vermouth
- tonic
- orange
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: soda.
Method
- Sweet vermouth over ice with tonic and a thick slice of orange. Low in alcohol and the correct thing to drink before dinner.
- Vermouth is a fresh ingredient. The bottle open in the cupboard since last year is why yours tastes stewed — keep it in the fridge and finish it inside a month.
- One part vermouth to two of tonic, and adjust toward the vermouth as the evening goes.
- It is what Italy drinks in the afternoon and it is almost unknown anywhere else.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
- tonic
- Bitter and sweet at once, so it is a mixer with an opinion.
- orange
- Sweeter and rounder than lemon and lime, so it softens rather than sharpens.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Amaro tonic
Amaro and tonic over plenty of ice. Two kinds of bitterness that turn out to soften each other.
