easyWhy tonight. Boulevardier's drier cousin. Rye, dry vermouth, Campari. Stir, don't shake.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- rye
- dry vermouth
- campari
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: lemon.
Method
- A Boulevardier built with dry vermouth instead of sweet, which makes it noticeably leaner and more bitter.
- Equal parts rye, dry vermouth and Campari, stirred cold.
- Rye rather than bourbon. The whole drink is dry and bourbon's sweetness undoes the point of it.
- Lemon peel rather than orange, for the same reason.

What the method is trying to make happen
Sequence, correction, heat and texture, equipment workarounds, scaling, and component reuse are available with this cook sheet.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
The technique underneath this
- VinaigretteDispersing fat into acid so it stays dispersed for as long as dinner takes, which is all it has to do.separates immediately · greasy · too sharp · dull
- Building a sourSpirit, citrus and sugar in a fixed geometry, then adjusted for how strong the particular bottle in front of you is.thin and sharp · cloying · spirit disappears · no foam
Going wrong while you cook it? Say what it is doing and the triage will tell you what is happening, the smallest move, and the instinct to resist.

Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- rye
- Spice and a dry, peppery edge, which is why a rye drink tastes leaner than the same drink in bourbon.
- dry vermouth
- Wine, and it goes off like wine — the reason most home Martinis taste tired is a bottle that has sat open on a shelf since spring.
- campari
- Bitter, sweet and red, and it is not shy.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Campari soda
The simplest bitter drink there is, and the one that teaches you whether you actually like Campari.
Shares campari
Americano
Campari, vermouth and soda over ice — the Negroni before gin was added, and about half the strength.
Shares campari
Garibaldi
Campari and orange juice, but the juice has to be fluffy — blended or hard-shaken, so it aerates. That texture is the entire drink.

Negroni Sbagliato
The mistaken Negroni — prosecco where the gin should be. Lower, lighter, and easier to drink two of.
Next
Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
