easyWhy tonight. Equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred over ice and never shaken. The orange peel is a third ingredient, not a decoration.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- gin
- campari
- sweet vermouth
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: orange.
Method
- Equal parts — 1 oz each of gin, Campari and sweet vermouth — stirred over ice for thirty seconds.
- Over one big cube, or up in a coupe if you would rather it stayed at the strength you built it at.
- Orange peel expressed hard over the surface so the oil sits on top, then dropped in.
- Equal parts is the recipe and also the argument. Push the gin to 1¼ oz if your Campari is winning; that is the only adjustment worth making.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- gin
- Botanicals over a neutral base, and every bottle draws its own map — juniper-forward gin makes a bracing drink, a softer modern one makes a floral one.
- campari
- Bitter, sweet and red, and it is not shy.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Americano
Campari, vermouth and soda over ice — the Negroni before gin was added, and about half the strength.

Negroni Sbagliato
The mistaken Negroni — prosecco where the gin should be. Lower, lighter, and easier to drink two of.

Boulevardier
A Negroni that swapped gin for whiskey, and it wants a little more whiskey than equal parts to stand up to the Campari.

Mezcal Negroni
Campari and vermouth with smoke underneath. Mezcal is assertive, so pull it back slightly from equal parts the first time.
