What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- mezcal
- campari
- sweet vermouth
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: orange.
Method
- 1 oz mezcal, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet vermouth, stirred cold over ice.
- Big cube, orange peel expressed hard over the surface.
- Smoke and bitter are both loud, so this is a drink that rewards a rounder vermouth than you would use with gin.
- Split the base — half mezcal, half tequila — if the first sip reads as bonfire. Most people prefer it that way and few will say so.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- mezcal
- Smoke over the same agave backbone, and it does not blend so much as lead.
- campari
- Bitter, sweet and red, and it is not shy.
- sweet vermouth
- Fortified wine, which means it is perishable — an open bottle on a warm shelf is why so many home Manhattans taste dusty.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Americano
Campari, vermouth and soda over ice — the Negroni before gin was added, and about half the strength.

Negroni Sbagliato
The mistaken Negroni — prosecco where the gin should be. Lower, lighter, and easier to drink two of.

Boulevardier
A Negroni that swapped gin for whiskey, and it wants a little more whiskey than equal parts to stand up to the Campari.

Negroni
Equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred over ice and never shaken. The orange peel is a third ingredient, not a decoration.
