What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- white beans
- tuna
- red wine vinegar
- olive oil
- parsley
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: onion.
Method
- Dress the beans first, on their own and warm if possible. They take dressing in a way tuna never will.
- Oil-packed tuna, and use its oil. Water-packed makes this dry and there is nothing to add that fixes it.
- Fold the tuna in last in big flakes. Stirred hard it becomes paste and the dish is over.
- Onion sliced thin and soaked in the vinegar for two minutes first, which takes the burn off without cooking it.
An educational plan from a curated corpus. Not a nutrition, allergen, or doneness guarantee.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- white beans
- Creamy enough to thicken what they are in — mash a ladleful against the side of the pot and the whole dish gains body.
- tuna
- Canned in oil is a different ingredient from canned in water; the oil is flavor and should go into the dish, not the sink.
- red wine vinegar
- The workhorse acid for anything savory and cooked.
- olive oil
- Two ingredients sharing a name.
- parsley
- Not a garnish, a green note.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Tuna white bean toast
Two tins and no heat. Dress the beans on their own first and crush a third of them, or the whole thing rolls off the toast.

Caper lemon tuna
The can, capers, lemon, oil. It should taste briny and bright, not like cafeteria tuna.
Shares parsley, red wine vinegar
Chimichurri leftover chicken
Yesterday's chicken, today's sauce. Don't heat the parsley. Vinegar and garlic do the work.

Herb caper sauce
Spoon on fish, beans, or eggs.
