easyWhy tonight. Glaze, not batter. Sesame last so it stays nutty.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- chicken
- soy sauce
- honey
- sesame oil
- garlic
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: sesame seeds.
Method
- Sear the chicken dry and unsauced until it has real color. Sauced from the start it steams pale.
- Reduce the soy and honey separately into a glaze that coats a spoon.
- Glaze on in the last two minutes only, turning, so it lacquers rather than burning.
- Sesame oil off the heat and seeds toasted separately in a dry pan.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- chicken
- Two different foods depending on the cut.
- soy sauce
- Salt with a savory backbone, so it seasons and deepens in one move.
- honey
- Sweetness with a floral edge and enough body to change the texture of what it is in.
- sesame oil
- A seasoning, not a cooking oil.
- garlic
- Burns in seconds and turns the whole dish bitter, so it almost never goes in first.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Garlic broccoli
Hot pan, a lot of garlic. Stems first. It should still snap.
