easyWhy tonight. The German street bun without a pretzel: toasted bread, browned sausage, mustard, jammy onion. Don't put ketchup on it.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- sausage
- bread
- dijon
- onion
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: butter.
Method
- Never prick the sausage. Start it in a cold pan with a lid and a splash of liquid, then finish it hot and uncovered.
- Onions cooked long and slow in the rendered fat, twenty minutes, until they are nearly jam.
- Split the roll and toast the cut faces in the same pan.
- Mustard on the bread rather than over the sausage, so every bite gets it.
An educational plan from a curated corpus. Not a nutrition, allergen, or doneness guarantee.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- sausage
- Seasoned fat and meat that arrives pre-flavored, so it does double duty as protein and as the base a dish is built on.
- bread
- Structure, thickener, and the reason a lot of these dishes stretch.
- dijon
- Sharpness and, more usefully, emulsifying power — a spoonful is what holds oil and vinegar together in a dressing that would otherwise split.
- onion
- The base under most of this library.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares sausage, onion, bread
Sausage and peppers roll
Brown the sausages whole, then slice. Peppers and onions cooked twenty minutes until they collapse, not five until they soften.
Shares sausage, onion, dijon
Bratwurst skillet
Brown the sausages, jam the onions, potatoes in the fat. Mustard at the table is the sauce. Beer would be traditional; stock if the bottle is empty.
Shares bread, onion
Bagel and lox
Schmear, salmon, a lot of dill, thin onion. Capers if they are there. Open-faced is honest.
Shares bread, dijon
Ham mustard sandwich
Butter both sides. Mustard is the point.

Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
