New England boiled dinner
Corned beef would be classic; sausage is the drawer. Cabbage last so it stays itself. Mustard at the table. Don't make soup.

What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- sausage
- potato
- cabbage
- carrot
- onion
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: dijon.
Method
- Everything in by cooking time. All at once is why the cabbage is grey by the time the potatoes are soft.
- Potatoes and carrots first, cabbage in wedges for the last fifteen minutes only.
- A bare simmer, not a boil, so nothing falls apart.
- Season the water heavily — it is the only chance the vegetables have to be seasoned inside. Mustard at the table.
An educational plan from a curated corpus. Not a nutrition, allergen, or doneness guarantee.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- sausage
- Seasoned fat and meat that arrives pre-flavored, so it does double duty as protein and as the base a dish is built on.
- potato
- Waxy holds its shape, floury falls apart, and almost every potato complaint is the wrong one for the job.
- cabbage
- Cheap, keeps for weeks, and completely different raw and cooked.
- carrot
- Sweetness that survives long cooking, which is why it sits under so many braises.
- onion
- The base under most of this library.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.
