easyWhy tonight. Coffee liqueur, amaretto and cream layered by density. Pour each over the back of a spoon and it stacks in three visible bands.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- coffee liqueur
- amaretto
- cream
Method
- Layered, densest first: coffee liqueur, then Irish cream, then orange liqueur, each poured slowly over the back of a bar spoon held against the glass.
- The layers work because of sugar content, not magic. Pour in the wrong order and it simply mixes.
- Cold ingredients and a steady hand. Any speed at all and the layers break.
- Meant to be drunk in one, which rather defeats the layering, and doing it anyway is the joke.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- coffee liqueur
- Sweet, roasted and thick, so it brings body as well as flavor.
- amaretto
- Almond-scented and very sweet, so it functions as the sugar in a drink rather than as an addition to it.
- cream
- Fat that carries flavor and will not split the way milk does, which is why it can be reduced hard.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares amaretto, coffee liqueur, cream
Toasted almond
Amaretto, coffee liqueur and cream. Sweet, and unapologetic about it — a dessert that happens to be a drink.
Shares coffee liqueur, cream
White Russian
Vodka and coffee liqueur with cream floated on top. Do not stir it in the glass; the layers are how it is supposed to arrive.
Shares coffee liqueur
Black Russian
The same without cream, which makes it a much drier drink and a far better one after dinner.
Shares amaretto
Godfather
Scotch and amaretto, and nothing else. Two ingredients, poured over one big cube, and it is a whole after-dinner drink.
Next
Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
