What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- amaro
- cola
- lime
Method
- Amaro and cola over ice with a hard squeeze of lime. Both are bitter, spiced and caramel-sweet, so they sit together naturally.
- Cola is sweeter than amaro is bitter, so start at one part amaro to two of cola and go up.
- Build it in the glass and stir once. No shaking, or the cola goes flat.
- It is what to drink instead of a rum and coke, and it is a better drink by a distance.

Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- amaro
- Bitter herbal liqueur, and every bottle is its own recipe.
- cola
- Sweet, acidic and caramel-heavy, which is enough structure to carry a spirit on its own.
- lime
- Sharper and more floral than lemon, and it fades faster — juice it the same hour you use it.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares cola, lime
Cuba Libre
Rum and cola with a real squeeze of lime, which is the difference between a cocktail and a mixer poured over ice.
Shares amaro
Amaro coffee
Amaro and coffee, hot or over ice. The bitterness of both stacks rather than clashing, and it is what to serve instead of dessert.
Shares amaro
Amaro highball
Amaro and soda over ice, which is what Italy drinks after dinner and what most people should drink instead of a third glass of wine.
Shares amaro
Amaro spritz
Amaro, sparkling wine and soda. Darker and more bitter than an Aperol spritz, and the one to make when the spritz has gone too sweet.
