What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- gin
- chartreuse
- orange bitters
Method
- Gin and yellow Chartreuse, stirred, with orange bitters. Roughly three to one, and adjust toward the gin if the Chartreuse dominates.
- Yellow rather than green — it is softer, sweeter and honeyed, where green is aggressive.
- Stir it very cold. This is spirit-only and dilution is doing real work.
- Lemon peel expressed over the top, then discarded.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- gin
- Botanicals over a neutral base, and every bottle draws its own map — juniper-forward gin makes a bracing drink, a softer modern one makes a floral one.
- chartreuse
- Enormously herbal and enormously strong, made to a recipe almost nobody knows.
- orange bitters
- Peel bitterness without sweetness, so it sharpens a drink where a liqueur would soften it.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Bijou
Gin, Chartreuse and sweet vermouth — jewel-colored and much richer than a Martini. Stir it very cold.

Last Word
Equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino and lime. Nothing about that sounds like it should work and it is one of the great drinks.

Cloister
Gin and Chartreuse with grapefruit, which takes the sweetness out and leaves the herbs. Underrated and easy to drink.

Chartreuse rocks
Green Chartreuse over one large cube and nothing else. A hundred and thirty herbs, and the ice is what opens them up.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
