easyWhy tonight. The same drink with the botanicals removed, which means temperature and the vermouth are the entire flavor. There is nowhere to hide.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- vodka
- dry vermouth
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: lemon.
Method
- 2½ oz vodka, ½ oz dry vermouth, stirred cold, strained into a frozen glass.
- Vodka is a blank, so everything you can taste is the vermouth, the dilution and the temperature. All three have to be right.
- Lemon peel expressed over the top does more here than in a gin Martini, because there is nothing else aromatic in the glass.
- Keep the bottle in the freezer and the vermouth in the fridge, and this becomes a thirty-second drink.

What the method is trying to make happen
Sequence, correction, heat and texture, equipment workarounds, scaling, and component reuse are available with this cook sheet.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
The technique underneath this
- VinaigretteDispersing fat into acid so it stays dispersed for as long as dinner takes, which is all it has to do.separates immediately · greasy · too sharp · dull
- Building a sourSpirit, citrus and sugar in a fixed geometry, then adjusted for how strong the particular bottle in front of you is.thin and sharp · cloying · spirit disappears · no foam
Going wrong while you cook it? Say what it is doing and the triage will tell you what is happening, the smallest move, and the instinct to resist.

Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- vodka
- Deliberately quiet — it carries other flavors and dilutes without arguing.
- dry vermouth
- Wine, and it goes off like wine — the reason most home Martinis taste tired is a bottle that has sat open on a shelf since spring.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

If you bought for this, you can already make these
Shares vodka
Vodka soda
The cleanest possible long drink, which means there is nowhere for a rough vodka to hide. Lots of ice, fresh soda, a real squeeze of citrus.
Shares vodka
Bay Breeze
Cranberry and pineapple over vodka. Pineapple juice foams when it is shaken, and that head is what makes it look like a cocktail.
Shares vodka
Black Russian
The same without cream, which makes it a much drier drink and a far better one after dinner.
Shares vodka
Cape Codder
Vodka and cranberry with a real squeeze of lime, which is the entire difference between this and a mixer over ice.
Next
Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
