easyWhy tonight. Gin removed, so lime and sugar are the whole drink. It lives or dies on the lime being squeezed that day.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- vodka
- lime
- simple syrup
Method
- 2 oz vodka, ¾ oz lime, ¾ oz simple syrup, shaken hard and strained up.
- Vodka is a blank, so every fault is visible. Bottled lime juice will taste exactly like bottled lime juice.
- Colder than you think — a frozen glass does more for this drink than a better bottle would.
- If it tastes thin, add syrup rather than vodka. That is true of every sour and it is most true of this one.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- vodka
- Deliberately quiet — it carries other flavors and dilutes without arguing.
- lime
- Sharper and more floral than lemon, and it fades faster — juice it the same hour you use it.
- simple syrup
- Sugar already dissolved, which is the only form of sugar that works in a cold drink.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.
Cooks from the same box
If you bought for this, you can already make these
Shares vodka, lime
Cape Codder
Vodka and cranberry with a real squeeze of lime, which is the entire difference between this and a mixer over ice.
Shares vodka, lime
Moscow mule
Vodka, ginger beer and lime. The copper mug is theater, but a properly spicy ginger beer is not optional.
Shares lime, simple syrup
Gimlet
Gin, fresh lime, sugar. Cordial makes it a different and worse drink, and shaking rather than stirring is correct here.
Shares vodka, lime
Cosmopolitan
Vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime and a splash of cranberry. Made with fresh lime it is a genuinely good sour; made with bottled it is why it fell out of fashion.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
