easyWhy tonight. Vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime and a splash of cranberry. Made with fresh lime it is a genuinely good sour; made with bottled it is why it fell out of fashion.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- vodka
- cointreau
- lime
- cranberry juice
Method
- 1½ oz citrus vodka, ¾ oz Cointreau, ½ oz lime, ¼ oz cranberry. Shake hard, strain up.
- Cranberry is for color and a little tartness. Any more than a quarter ounce and it becomes juice.
- Flame or express an orange peel over the top — the oil is what makes it smell expensive.
- It went out of fashion because it was made badly for a decade, not because it is a bad drink.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- vodka
- Deliberately quiet — it carries other flavors and dilutes without arguing.
- cointreau
- Clean bitter orange with real sweetness behind it, so it does two jobs in a sour and lets you use less syrup.
- lime
- Sharper and more floral than lemon, and it fades faster — juice it the same hour you use it.
- cranberry juice
- Only worth using unsweetened, and almost everything on the shelf is not.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Cape Codder
Vodka and cranberry with a real squeeze of lime, which is the entire difference between this and a mixer over ice.
Shares vodka, cranberry juice
Bay Breeze
Cranberry and pineapple over vodka. Pineapple juice foams when it is shaken, and that head is what makes it look like a cocktail.

Gin cranberry
Gin and cranberry with lime, which is drier and more interesting than the vodka version because the botanicals have something to argue with.

Moscow mule
Vodka, ginger beer and lime. The copper mug is theater, but a properly spicy ginger beer is not optional.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
