What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- potato
- salmon
- dill
- dijon
- sour cream
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: lemon.
Method
- Dress the potatoes while they are still warm so they absorb, then cool them before the fish goes near.
- Sour cream and mustard whisked together first, then folded through the cooled potatoes.
- Salmon torn in and folded at the very end, in big pieces, so it does not break up.
- Dill in quantity and lemon at the table. It is better after an hour in the fridge.

Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- potato
- Waxy holds its shape, floury falls apart, and almost every potato complaint is the wrong one for the job.
- salmon
- Fatty enough to forgive a lot, but not overcooking.
- dill
- Grassy and slightly anise, and it belongs to cold food more than hot.
- dijon
- Sharpness and, more usefully, emulsifying power — a spoonful is what holds oil and vinegar together in a dressing that would otherwise split.
- sour cream
- Acid and fat that cools heat and loosens a heavy dish.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
