easyWhy tonight. Juniper and ginger. Cucumber if it is on the board.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- gin
- ginger beer
- lime
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: mint, cucumber.
Method
- 2 oz gin, ½ oz lime, ginger beer over ice.
- Juniper and ginger are both aromatic and they can fight, so a softer contemporary gin works better here than a big London dry.
- Mint slapped once and laid on top, which turns it towards a Moscow mule's better-dressed cousin.
- One gentle lift only, from the bottom. Stirring a ginger beer drink costs you the fizz that was the point of making it.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- gin
- Botanicals over a neutral base, and every bottle draws its own map — juniper-forward gin makes a bracing drink, a softer modern one makes a floral one.
- ginger beer
- Heat and sweetness with real carbonation behind it, which is why it carries a drink that ginger ale only decorates.
- lime
- Sharper and more floral than lemon, and it fades faster — juice it the same hour you use it.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Dark and Stormy
Dark rum floated over ginger beer and lime so it arrives in layers. Stir it yourself at the table; that is the point.
Shares gin, lime
Gin cranberry
Gin and cranberry with lime, which is drier and more interesting than the vodka version because the botanicals have something to argue with.
Shares gin, lime
Gin rickey
Gin, lime and soda with no sugar at all. It is bracing rather than refreshing, and it is the driest long drink on the list.
