mediumWhy tonight. Lemon muddled with mint and sugar, then bourbon over crushed ice. The whole lemon wedge goes in, pith and all.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bourbon
- mint
- lemon
- sugar
Method
- Half a lemon cut into quarters, muddled in the tin with the sugar until the oil comes out of the peel. You are pressing the skin, not the flesh.
- A handful of mint added and pressed once, gently.
- 2 oz bourbon, ice, shaken hard, then dumped unstrained into the glass or double-strained over fresh ice.
- A sour that went through the garden. The lemon peel is doing as much work as the juice, which is why it is not just a whiskey sour with mint in it.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bourbon
- Corn-sweet and vanilla-heavy from new oak, so it takes bitterness and citrus without being flattened.
- mint
- Loud, cooling, and easily wrecked.
- lemon
- Acid you add at the end, not the start.
- sugar
- Not just sweetness — it balances acid and bitterness, which is why a sour drink and a tomato sauce both want a little.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.
