easyWhy tonight. Hot coffee, whiskey, a little sugar, and cream floated over the back of a spoon so it sits rather than mixes.
What it needs
Nothing confirmed on your shelf yet — this list is the whole ask.
- bourbon
- coffee
Good if you have them, fine if you do not: sugar.
Method
- Warm the mug first with hot water and tip it out.
- 2 oz bourbon into hot black coffee, with a spoon of brown sugar stirred until it has entirely gone.
- No cream, no float, no whipping — this is the plain version and it is better than it sounds precisely because there is nothing hiding the coffee.
- A strip of orange peel dropped in. Bourbon and orange belong together and the heat carries the oil.
An educational pour, not a reprint of a licensed spec. No allergen or alcohol-safety claim.
Cook or pour it, then edit the shelf if you emptied a bottle or used the last of something.
Why each of these is on the list
What the ingredients are actually doing
- bourbon
- Corn-sweet and vanilla-heavy from new oak, so it takes bitterness and citrus without being flattened.
- coffee
- Bitterness and roast, which is why it turns up in savory rubs as often as in dessert.
Missing one of them? The substitutions are written against those jobs rather than against a chart, so they say what each replacement costs this dish in particular.

Shares bourbon, coffee
Bourbon espresso
Bourbon, fresh coffee and a little sugar. Whiskey and coffee are both barrel-aged flavors, which is why they sit together so easily.

Coffee Old Fashioned
Cold coffee as the water. Maple instead of sugar. Don't make it a dessert.
Shares coffee
Amaro coffee
Amaro and coffee, hot or over ice. The bitterness of both stacks rather than clashing, and it is what to serve instead of dessert.
Shares bourbon
Whiskey highball
Whiskey and soda, and the only things that matter are the coldness of the glass and the freshness of the bubbles.
Next
Cook it, then tell the shelf what you used.
The ranking is only as honest as the shelf behind it. Empty the cream, and everything that leaned on cream should stop being offered.
